Almost 3 months after initial release of our 2018 Northern Hemisphere Tropical Cyclone Forecast we were invited to give a talk introducing our modeling approach to the Data Science Sydney (DSS) group. Presenting at the DSS is always a good reality check given the machine learning expertise from the audience, and we are glad to report that our model passed the test.
Beyond the technical model description, the talk also recalls our early June forecast and compares our numbers to the activity recorded at the time. Note the event occurred on the 28th August – a couple of days before Florence formed – and at that stage activity in the North Atlantic had been pretty much below average…
