EGU 2024: Tropical cyclone induced coastal flooding under current and future climates

Reask and the University of Southampton have developed a novel model framework to assess coastal flood hazards caused by tropical cyclones, both today and under future climate scenarios.

This poster, presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, showcases a collaborative effort between Reask, Fathom, and the University of Southampton to build a continental-scale risk model for tropical cyclone–driven coastal flooding.

It covers:

  • TC clustering methods to create a reference catalogue of simulated storm tracks

  • Storm surge modelling to estimate water levels and inundation

  • Future climate projections to evaluate flood risk under different warming scenarios

The research demonstrates how synthetic storm catalogues and machine learning–based modelling can accelerate large-scale hazard simulations while maintaining accuracy.
